Some days our glass is overflowing. Nothing but good things happen to us. Life is wonderful.
Some days our glass is nearly empty. Everything goes wrong. We face terrible challenges. Life is hard.
But most days are a mix of good and bad. Our glass is half full. These are the days where attitude makes all the difference. Is our day wonderful because of the good things that happened or awful because of the bad things? We get to decide.
I had a rough day today. The toddler bit the baby. The baby had a nasty bout of vomiting. And yet…I can’t stop smiling. All I can think about is how incredibly lucky I am.
Many people face terrible, tragic situations that no amount of positive thinking can fix. They struggle to put food on the table. They have a life-threatening illness. They have lost a loved one.
Yet for many of us, that is not the case. We live imperfect, but truly wonderful lives. We are blessed with so much good fortune, but we also face endless, everyday challenges;
- sick children,
- lost items,
- tight quarters,
- and more.
In the face of these challenges, we have a choice.
We can let our challenges ruin our day. We can focus our energy on all the things we don’t have, can’t do, that didn’t work out.
We can be grateful. We can recognize all the wonderful things we do have. All the things that make our lives wonderful. We can see how blessed we are and rejoice.
Me…The baby got sick while the toddler was at preschool, so I could give him my full attention. The things I “needed” to do today could wait. The amazing mom we carpool with was happy to pick up my older son from preschool so I didn’t have to worry about loading a sick baby into the car. And I have two wonderful (basically) healthy young sons who I have the privilege of raising. I have so much to be thankful for.
What about you? What do you have to be grateful for today?
